Shanties built on setbacks along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are being demolished by the Ogun State Government.
According to the government, the shanties were built illegally and are causing environmental problems along that corridor.
Farook Akintunde, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, who flagged off the demolition exercise at the Kara, OPIC axis in Isheri, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state, said the state government embarked on the demolition after several warnings and notices were served to the owners of the shanties, who were mostly traders, to vacate all the road setbacks and move to formally recognized markets.

“The state government will not stand by and watch these shanties deface the state’s aesthetic beauty, which serves as a gateway to many other states in the union.”
“Not only are these structures unsightly, but they also house criminals who pose as traders during the day but carry out their nefarious activities at night.”
“Aside from that, the genuine traders among them sell in a filthy environment that breeds rodents and vectors that have negative health consequences for those who patronize them, particularly unsuspecting commuters seeking quick-fix meals,” Akintunde said.
