EFCC Chairman Bawa respond as the court sends him to Kuje Prison

FCT, Abuja – Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, claims he has appealed the decision ordering his remand.
According to TheCable, Bawa made this statement on Tuesday in Abuja while answering questions from reporters.

“We have appealed against it already so we will allow the natural course of the law to take its effect,” he said.

An Abuja high court ordered the remand of the EFCC boss due to the anti-graft agency’s failure to comply with an earlier court order. The presiding judge, Chizoba Oji, directed the inspector-general of police (IGP) to commit Bawa to prison for disobedience.

The order was issued in response to a motion on notice filed by Adeniyi Ojuawo, a retired air vice marshal, against the federal government.
The judge ruled that Bawa is in contempt of court after the commission failed to return a Range Rover and N40 million to Ojuawo.

“He should be committed to prison at Kuje Correctional Centre for his disobedience, and continued disobedience of the said order of court made on November 21st, 2018, until he purges himself of the contempt,” the judge said. In 2016, the EFCC charged Ojuawo on two counts before Muawiyah Baba Idris, an FCT judge, in Nyanya. He was charged with receiving N40 million in gratification from Hima Aboubakar of Societe D’Equipment Internationaux Nigeria Limited and a Range Rover Sport (supercharged) worth N29.250 million. However, on November 21, 2018, the judge discharged and acquitted Ojuawo on the grounds that the prosecution had not made its case. The EFCC was then ordered by the judge to return the money and the car to him.
