Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and human rights advocate, was taken into custody at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
When other demonstrators were arrested by the police on Monday, Sowore, the leader of the #FreeNnamdiKanuProtest in Abuja, had already left.
Later, he announced on social media that 13 demonstrators, including the brother and attorney of Nnamdi Kanu, had been arrested.
The activist insisted that he had the right to demonstrate despite the police warning people preparing to hold a demonstration for the release of the imprisoned leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) not to approach certain restricted areas of the country’s capital.
According to a video, Sowore had already appeared in the Kanu matter at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“I spoke with Kanu Agabi, Kanu Nnandi’s primary attorney, at the Federal High Court today, and he informed me that his team will be abandoning the case, thus Nnamdi Kanu will have to go through his trial without counsel. Even before his arrest, Sowore had posted, “He was certain that it was entirely political.”
A group of cops approached him as he was leaving the court and requested that he accompany them to the station.
Following some back and forth, the activist and politician accompanied them.
Speaking about the detention, one of Sowore’s colleagues stated that he had previously been invited by the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) Commissioner of Police.
He intended to accept their invitation. The itinerary included it. The associate who yearned for obscurity remarked, “I wonder why they were so much in a hurry.”
