Dr. Aminu Yusuf and two other nominations have been confirmed by the Senate as Federal Commissioners and the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).
According to reports, the confirmation came after the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population presented and adopted a report at the plenary session on Tuesday, October 21.
Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), the committee’s chair, presented the findings and named the confirmed nominees as follows:
NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf of Niger State, Federal Commissioners Joseph Haruna Kigbu of Nasarawa State, and Tonga Betara Bularafa of Yobe State.
According to Umeh, the nominees were deemed qualified for the roles after they appeared before the committee for vetting on October 14, 2025.
“On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the nominees came before the committee for screening,” Umeh informed MPs.
“No criminal complaints were filed against any of the nominees by the committee. They are ready to take on the position for which they were nominated.
Umeh claims that before the screening started, the committee made sure all the paperwork was in order.
In accordance with customary protocol, he said, the nominees provided their police reports, DSS security clearance, curriculum vitae, and certificates of code of conduct clearance.
“Each nominee gave a thorough presentation during the screening process, which was followed by a Q&A period,” Umeh continued.
“The candidates demonstrated their qualifications, experience, and vision, emphasizing their fit for the roles.”
After discussions, the Senate reportedly confirmed all three nominations by adopting the committee’s findings by voice vote.
Yusuf now formally assumes leadership of the NPC, which is in charge of managing demographic data, conducting censuses, and carrying out national population strategy.
Citing the necessity to realign the commission in advance of the upcoming national census, President Bola Tinubu had previously sent the names of the nominees to the Senate for confirmation.
As the government strives to increase the accuracy of national statistics, which is essential for development and economic planning policies, the appointments are anticipated to fortify the NPC’s institutional ability.
