The Rivers State Council has passed a petition to revoke the recognition of Celestine Omehia, a former Governor of Rivers.

House of Representatives Leader Martin Amaewmule made a motion to overturn an earlier 8th Assembly resolution on June 30, 2015, which required the executive branch, led by Governor Nyesom Wike, to recognized Omehia as a former governor and granted all rights, privileges and benefits.

He suggested that Omehia’s continued recognition would bridge the 2007 Supreme Court ruling thatremoved Celestine Omehia as governor for not being a validly elected candidate in the 2016 election.

The lawmakers also submitted a copy of the Nigeria’s Weekly Law Report which contained the landmark ruling that removed Omehia from office and declared Rotimi Amaechi a duly elected candidate of the PDP at the time and is the right person to serve as Governor.

He said the petition is now moved to annul the previous resolution because the 9th NationalAssembly has better knowledge and details of the aforementioned Supreme Court ruling.Amaewmule, who represents Obio/Akpor First Constituency, submitted four prayers to the house for approval.

The prayers are that;

1. The House rescind its earlier resolution that Omehia be recognised.

2. Omehia ceases to use the title “HIS EXCELLENCY”

3. Omehia stops using the acronym “GSSRS”, meaning, Grand Service Star of Rivers State, which is a state honour meant for an incumbent and former Governors alone.

3. Omehia refunds all monitory entitlements received from the Rivers State Government, especially the sum of 600 million naira in benefits and 96.5 million naira in pension he has so far received as at September 2022 from the Rivers State Government within seven days.

4. Any other decisions that the house deemed necessary.

The motion was seconded by the Whip of the House, Evans Bipi.

During a debate, all contributing legislators, including the representative of the Celestine Omehiaconstituency in the local government area of Ikwerre, Anselm Oguguo, accepted the prayer.

However, some lawmakers have called for a specific decision on what action to take if Celestine Omehia does not return the monetary benefits.

After the debate, the 21 members present in the plenary session voted in favor of the Speaker’s FourPrayers.

Rivers State House Speaker Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani said that the House of Representatives was right in making the decision because no law is absolute.
