According to Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State, teachers’ years of service will be increased from 35 to 40 years, and their retirement age will be immediately raised from 60 to 65.
The governor made the announcement on Sunday at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, which was the site of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day event.
Additionally, Oyebanji gave away N46 million in cash prizes to exceptional teachers throughout the state in an effort to recognize their commitment to and success in the teaching profession.
According to him, the purpose of raising the retirement age and years of service is to keep seasoned teachers in the classroom and support the state’s education system.
To ensure that the new policy would only benefit instructors who are physically and psychologically healthy, he said, a special committee will be established to supervise the implementation process.
The governor additionally declared the immediate payment of unpaid 2019 leave bonus arrears and an increase in allowances for department heads and science teachers.
“The foundation of our state’s future is its teachers. This program is a component of our shared prosperity agenda, which aims to improve their well-being and inspire them to keep influencing the next generation, Oyebanji stated.
