Peter Obi raise concerns over extravagant spending by FG – See details

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, raised concerns about extravagant spending in the Nigerian government, drawing comparisons with practices in the United States. Speaking on the allocation of vehicles to legislators and the expenses associated with the office of the First Lady, Obi emphasized that such practices differ significantly from those in the United States.

In a video recently shared on YouTube by AIT, Obi noted that in America, there is no dedicated office for the First Lady beyond ceremonial roles and accompanying the President on trips. He criticized the creation of offices with substantial budgets, suggesting that these funds could be more effectively directed toward critical areas of development.

Highlighting the financial prudence observed in the United States, Obi pointed out that American legislators do not receive government-purchased vehicles, and if the President decides to entertain guests or travel, the associated costs are covered personally. He also emphasized that there are no extensive renovations of multiple houses for the President, and when traveling, the President stays in hotels rather than government-owned residences.

In urging a reevaluation of spending practices to align with the nation’s needs, Obi stressed the importance of adopting approaches that suit Nigeria’s economic realities.

In Peter Obi’s words: “I have never heard in America that they bought vehicles for legislators, you can’t just buy cars anyhow. You can’t buy cars for first ladies anyhow, in America there is no office called the office of First Lady. It exists in name and to accompany the president on trips, not to have an office created with enormous budgets that are even beyond criteria areas of development.

In America, if a President chooses today to entertain guests, he will pay for the food. If he chooses to have different dishes, he will pay for it. You don’t have renovations of different houses for the president. If the President of America goes to New York today he stays in a Hotel. I accompanied the president on a trip in the past, the president of America stayed in a hotel. So these are issues so we must look at what suits us and how we can manage our expense”.
