Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, says the pilot statewide deployment and use of Virtual Court Proceedings in Correctional Centers across the country is on track.
Dr. Umar Gwandu, the Attorney General’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, made the announcement in a press statement in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“Malami is to commence the pilot project for the deployment and use of Virtual Court Sitting capabilities at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on Monday, December 6th, 2021,” according to the announcement.
“The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Halilu Nababa, and members of the Presidential Committee on Correctional Reforms and Decongestion” are among those expected to attend.
“The Secretary of the Presidential Committee on Correctional Reforms and Decongestion, Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, is working assiduously with the representative of the supporting organization, Mrs Oyinye Ndubuisi of the UNDP, to ensure the successful completion of the laudable project,” according to the statement.
“The project is one of the strategic interventions by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as well as the Federal Government, to engender enduring reforms in the Criminal Justice Sector in Nigeria,” according to Dr. Gwandu.
He stated that the Consolidated Sentencing Guidelines (Custodial and Non-Custodial) Practice Directions would be developed in 2020.

To avoid disruptions, the Ministry, in partnership with the Presidential Committee on Correctional Reforms and Decongestion, will expedite interaction with Nigerian Correctional Centres to allow for the collection of evidence from suspects in detention without their physical presence in court.
