The place where the national convention of a group of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala was supposed to take place was empty on Tuesday, with no delegates or party officials in sight.
The convention was supposed to take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, but the stadium was still empty when it was supposed to start.
A TV Platinum correspondent who was watching on Facebook said that there were no preparations or activities going on at the venue and that key parts of the complex, like the velodrome, were locked.
This news comes at a time when the ADC is going through a leadership crisis. Bala and another group led by former Senate President David Mark are both claiming to be the party’s leader.
Bala’s group had set April 21, 2026, as the date for its convention, just days after rejecting the April 14 convention planned by the other group, calling it a violation of a court ruling that was still in effect.
He had also questioned the validity of the earlier convention because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not there, which he said showed that it was not officially recognized.
The argument has gotten worse since then, with both sides claiming to be the rightful leader of the party and its legitimacy before the general elections in 2027.
Justice Emeka Nwite is in charge of the Federal High Court, which is currently looking into the case. INEC has refused to recognize Bala as acting national chairman.
