On October 7, the 10th Senate will return to plenary, and it is anticipated that senators will discuss important national concerns, such as the hotly contested topic of local government autonomy.
This was said in a statement released on Sunday by Jackson Udom, the Senate President’s Special Assistant on Media, which outlined the topics that will be at the forefront of the agenda when plenary returns.
In addition, he said, MPs will concentrate on the 2026 Appropriations Bill, security, economic growth, constitutional review, and electoral reforms.
It is anticipated that MPs will support the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government authority when the plenary session resumes. This will provide councils nationwide both financial and administrative autonomy,” Udom stated.
He clarified that in spite of the historic decision, governors continued to have control over money intended for councils through joint accounts.
The Senate will give priority to the 2026 Appropriations Bill, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must submit by the end of the year, Udom added.
He continued, “It is anticipated that the budget will tackle issues such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity.”
Constitutional revisions, electoral reforms, and steps to improve peace and national security are anticipated to be among the other topics on the agenda.
He asserts that the leadership of the 10th Senate has underlined the significance of legislative oversight in guaranteeing accountability and openness in governance.
