The Ogun State police command has revealed how a 23-year-old mother, Mary Olatayo, sold her three-week-old baby for N600,000 in the state recently.

The command said that the lady was arrested on August 18, following a complaint it received from the father of the baby at the Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters in Mowe area of the state.

According to the state police command, the father of the baby said that having discovered that the lady was pregnant for him, he rented an apartment for her where she lived till she gave birth to the baby boy, but suddenly disappeared afterwards with the baby.

The police said the man claimed that the lady ran to meet and live with another man at a hotel in Mowe and kept the baby somewhere else which he was yet to know as of the time of reporting the matter.

Upon receipt of the complaint, the state police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the DPO of Mowe Division, SP Folake Afeniforo, sent some detectives to the hotel to arrest the lady.

While being interrogated, Oyeyemi said the lady “confessed to the police that she has sold the baby to someone in Anambra State at the rate of six hundred thousand Naira. She confessed that it was her friend, Chioma Esther Ogbonna, who led her to the buyer in the state and that they both shared the money equally.”

Her confession reportedly led to the arrest of Chioma, who Oyeyemi said also corroborated Mary’s claims.

The Police investigation, according to Oyeyemi, also revealed that Olatayo a native of Omu-Aran in Kwara State “is a call girl who sees the baby as a disturbance to her business, hence she decided to do away with the baby.”

Oyeyemi added that Olatayo had an accomplice in Imo-born Chioma, “who quickly contacted the buyer in Anambra State.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State CIID for further investigation.

CP Bankole also directed that everything legal must be done to recover the sold baby.
