At the end of the Automated Biometric Identification System on Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission found that 2,780,756 people in Kano State were not eligible to register.

During a meeting with election stakeholders, the new Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kano, Zango Abdu, stated that at the end of the exercise, 12,298, 944 Nigerians successfully completed the registration as new voters.
“The preliminary voter register in Kano State currently stands at 5,927,565,” he said.

“It is preliminary because Section 19 (1) and (2) of the Electoral Act 2022 require the Commission to display hard copies of the register of voters for each registration area (Ward) and Local Government Area (and simultaneously publish the entire register on the Commission’s website) for two weeks for scrutiny, claims, and objections by citizens no later than 90 days before a general election.”

Furthermore, the REC reiterated that the commission would continue to monitor political party activities and track campaign finances for all political parties, as required by Sections 83, 85, 87, 88, 90, 91,92, and 95 of the Electoral Act of 2022.

To that end, he urged politicians to critically study and pay attention to the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act, the Police Act, and the Public Order Act for the proper and peaceful conduct of political party campaigns, rallies, and processions, while also stating that the commission would continue to track campaign finances and activities as required by law.

Similarly, the REC emphasized that the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System for voter accreditation and transmission of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal on Election Day would not be reversed.
Finally, he stated that there would be no incident form that allowed ineligible people to vote during elections using another person’s Permanent Voters Card.
