Nigerian artists have received advice from DJ Big N, also known as Nonso Temisan Ajufo, the disk jockey for Mavin Records, on how to increase their chances of winning at the Grammy Awards.
At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, South African celebrity Tyla defeated Nigerian musicians Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Omah Lay, and Wizkid in the Best African Music Performance category.
DJ Big N responded via his X page on Monday, claiming that Nigerian musicians’ lack of participation in American music seminars and events was the reason for their subpar Grammy outing.
He urged them to follow in the footsteps of multiple Grammy-winning Beninese artist Angelique Kidjo by attending more American music events and participating in the Grammy selection process.
“It is extremely painful that so many gifted Nigerians were nominated but failed to win the Grammy this time,” he added. That being said, legends such as @angeliquekidjo and @YoussouNdourSN have demonstrated the value of involvement outside of the award ceremony.
“Kidjo is present at those seminars and events, making her presence known.” In order to alter the game, we must follow suit. Together, we can participate in the voting process throughout the year by joining the @RecordingAcad voting body. In this way, we really leave our mark.
