Greenland belonged to Denmark, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday, who emphasized that NATO might talk about bolstering its defense if needed.
Wadephul made this statement in response to US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to seize Greenland, which frightened NATO members and gained additional urgency when Trump carried out his threats to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Remember that Trump first expressed his desire to conquer Greenland in 2019 during his first term as president.
In an interview with The Atlantic magazine on Sunday, Trump revived the initiative, saying, “We do need Greenland, absolutely.” We require it for defense.
However, Wadephul told reporters in Lithuania that Germany had concerns about Maduro’s overthrow, emphasizing that the Venezuelan people should decide their nation’s future through free and fair elections following Trump’s declaration that the US would rule the nation.
Wadephul emphasized that Greenland was a part of Denmark.
He said, “And since Denmark is a NATO member, Greenland will, in theory, also be subject to NATO defense.”
