Following Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow rally in Abuja, Nigeria Police have charged Nnamdi Kanu’s brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his attorney Aloy Ejimakor, and ten other people.
Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the former National Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (HRCN), posted the court papers to this effect via X on Tuesday.
They are being charged by the police with violating a court order and inciting disturbance and breach of public peace.
According to the paper shown, the accused chanted war songs, demanded the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and restricted the freedom of movement of other citizens while obstructing traffic.
While answering questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today show on Monday, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, reportedly stated that Ejimakor and Kanu’s brother, among others, would be charged on Tuesday.
Hundeyin added that following an inquiry, individuals detained during the demonstration would face charges in court.
“We detained Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his attorney because they refused to leave the restricted areas,” he stated. Not only that, but six other people were also taken into custody in the vicinity of TRANSCORP for the same reason. Thus, we took eight of them into custody.
They are now at the state CID, and as we stated in our statement, anyone who disobeyed that court order will be taken into custody, thoroughly probed, and prosecuted after our investigation is over.
“Therefore, they will face the court within 24 hours of our reaching that conclusion, which we should do tonight, and they will be prosecuted immediately.”
