– (THEWILL) 3rd of January Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, a former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), has died.

According to family sources, Tofa died in the early hours of Monday at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) after a brief illness.

Tofa, who was born on June 20, 1947, died 29 years after contesting and losing the June 12, 1993, presidential election to the late Chief Mashood Abiola, which was widely regarded as one of the most free elections in the country but was annulled by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s military junta.

Tofa will be buried today in Kano, according to Islamic rites.
