In order to regain credibility, Ezenwa Nwagwu, a supporter of democratic reforms and public accountability, has encouraged Prof. Joash Ojo-Amupitan, the recently nominated head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to handle a variety of interests and fend off political pressure.
It was during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday that Nwagwu made the call.
Rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system will require strong, independent, and credible leadership, he added, and he asked the Nigerian Senate to screen Prof. Amupitan in a transparent and thorough manner.
Although the president has nominated someone, the Council of State must first see the profile of the candidate before it can be given.
“There needs to be greater transparency in that supervision system. The Council of State unanimously approved, and that’s all we ever hear. He stated that it would have been preferable if we had been aware of any votes or opposing views.
He said the Senate’s anti-corruption, electoral, and intelligence committees should not just support the candidate but should actively work with him.
