The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), and Senate President Godswill Akpabio spoke on Wednesday about the ongoing shift of legislators from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC.
The dispute arose after Senator Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu East) defected to the APC from the Labour Party (LP).
Chukwu had claimed that the breakdown of internal democracy and the disarray among his previous party were the reasons behind his decision.
After reading Senator Chukwu’s letter, Akpabio reportedly made fun of the opposition by declaring that he was no longer concerned about their declining numbers.
“Let them all move here if they so choose. All political parties are in ruins, Akpabio said, calling on opposition groups to band together. “Your decision to leave a tattered house is accepted,” he said.
In response, Senator Abba Moro stated: “Mr. President, you are the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with all due respect.” We are able to hold our own regardless of the number of people there.
Along with wishing Senator Chukwu luck in his new party, the Benue senator also voiced alarm about the growing number of defections, claiming the Senate was getting too crowded.
He claimed that he had come here on a sympathy vote and through the Obedient movement, but that is a different story.
