Mohammed Adamu Aliero, the senator for Kebbi Central, has denounced the increasing practice of election losers attempting to rescind polling results.

The congressman cautioned that the trend of using bribery through the legal system must halt during the opening ceremony of a retreat for the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters, which was hosted at the Legend Hotel on Airport Road in Lagos.

According to him, it is a grave abuse that threatens Nigeria’s democracy.

He might not even contest the election’s outcome. The senator stated, “There has been a case in the past where the loser goes to court after losing the election, then he will bribe his way and get himself declared no longer desirable.”

He bemoaned the fact that such actions denigrate the electoral process and cautioned that trust in democratic institutions would keep declining in the absence of reforms.

Aliero went on to say that MPs have been working hard to overhaul Nigeria’s election system for more than a year and a half, including holding public hearings.

“We will make all necessary changes to ensure that there are no misunderstandings, contradictions, or inconsistencies. In order to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, we are working to rectify the numerous flaws in the Electoral Act 2022 that we have found,” he stated.
