Prof Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that the two major political parties in Nigeria have failed to alleviate poverty and suffering among Nigerians.

Jega stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) were unable to provide competent leaders to Nigerians, instead relying on members of their respective camps.

He went on to say that despite the fact that both parties were in power for a long time, they were unable to transform Nigeria.

According to the Daily Trust, Jega stated this in an interview on Monday, stating that Nigerians had suffered significant losses at the hands of the two parties.

“There is no doubt that the country’s ruling elites cannot transform the country into a better one,” Jega said. They’ve been in power for a long time, and nothing has changed. The two major parties, the PDP and the APC, have effectively closed the door on good and competent people entering the leadership system.

“They only give people from their camp chances to continue ruling us.” And this has deterred many people, particularly young people, from getting involved in politics; they believe it is always a bad thing.

“As a result, competent people who recognize the need to change our development trajectory and save the country as a whole are in high demand.”

However, Yekini Nabena, the APC’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, refuted Jega’s claims, claiming that the APC was healing the wounds it had encountered on the ground and thus was not a failure.

“Will he (Jega) churn out new politicians for his PRP?” They’re nothing more than political scavengers. The APC has not failed, and will never fail Nigerians, as he claims.

“We all know the PDP was a failure, which is why Nigerians elected a new president. As a result, the APC is mending its wounds; it is not a failed party,” he added.
